the 1988 M70 engine has the oil filler cap on the valve cover right bank cylinder 1-6 http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E3...er_head_cover/
from April 1990 there were different valve covers and the oil filler cap moved to the front of the engine between both banks http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E3...r_timing_case/

Maybe the engine has been opened before and they used the later valve cover on it

some people modify from old style to new style valve cover, but then you also need the timing case cover, top 11141725802 for the oil filler cap front. Easiest + cheapest is you buy a used old style valve cover right 11121720338 with the oil cap, in BMW language Rocker Box Cover Right. Old style is easier to get, as there were more old style M70 produced from start of production till April 1990 than the facelift M70 from 04/1990 - mid 1994.
You could also fill engine oil thru the engine oil dipstick pipe, that might be easier than thru the oil filter housing.
