    BMw E34 blower resistor

    Hello everyone
My e34 fan speed are not all working. When it's on 2 and 4 its always working, on 3 i should tap on the switch and it works and 1 it barely work. My question is: is the problem the resistor or the fan switch? If anyone can help thank you

blower speed problem is usually a problem of the resistor or the sword, depends what is installed in your car
    resistors by maker type http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E3...ts_for_heater/
    sword / limit switch http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E3..._limit_switch/
the speed of the fan blower is controlled through two types of setups on the BMW E34: the final stage unit (older E34s) also called "the sword" because of its look or the blower series resistance.
    Failure syndromes:
    • Fan blower not working on position 1,2 or 3,
    • Fan blowing in full blast whatever the position of the knob.

Can the problem be the fan switch? Once i switched another climate module and only the 3 didn't work and another one the 1 and 2. And when i tap on the current fan switch or when i press it in while changing from 2 to 3 it works. Can this be from the switch?

Could be the switch. Mine used to work on all the lower settings 1-3 but turning it to 4 didn't have any effect, still would blow at #3 level. I tried changing out the blower resistor but didn't make a difference.

So I removed the switch and cleaned with electrical contact cleaner. When I reassembled, voila had full power fan on #4 again!! Unfortunately over time its now gone back to it's old behavior but intermittently. So sometimes I get full power, most of the time it maxes out at 3. Haven't bothered to take it apart to clean again--it's kind of a pain--but if I do I think I'll try a stronger cleaner which may do the trick!
