    Vehicle weight

Simple question, but so far can not get a reasonable answer ---

assuming same option load (i.e. sunroof, interior option, etc) what is the weight difference in a manual M3 and an SMG M3?

That makes more sense than the garbage I read whe In posted the same question on FB.

Now, my thoughts on purchasing an SMG car, swapping all the track goodies, and selling the manual car has changed. NOW, I am looking at swapping an SMG box into my manual. There are orthopedic reasons for having a flappy paddle car. So --
    1) Besides the obvious (gearbox and maybe a different driveshaft, I need to know what else I need.
    2) I assume a change in electronic hardware.
    3) Will a reflash of the existing DME be needed (I assume so)?
    4) Will I need a computer for the gearbox? If so, is the wiring in place for that?
    5) Would I need to swap in an SMG steering column for the flappy pedals?
    6) or will there be enough work and headaches to justify grabby an SMG car as I originally thought of doing.

    1) Same driveshaft as both transmission are the same length.
    2) Yes, you will need the TCU plus the "S" button to control the shift times, another words the center console.
    3) Yes, so it knows to look for the TCU\
    4) Same as 1
    5) No, you will need the wheel as that's where it's attached to and the slip ring wiring.
    6) Yes plenty of headache, but I don't know where your threshold for silliness is I would say you are looking at a full 2 days just to pull everything, at best 3 at worst for I have never done this.

The SMG has it reservoir in the intake of the S-54, so you will need that too. IIRC the TCU will reside in the DME box, it's running the wiring that's going to be a real PITA, as you may have to cut it out of the harness, or take the whole harness, which includes EVERYTHING.

Well ..... F THAT !!! Already searching for an SMG car. If successful, I'll be transplanting the goodies, put my 6 speed back to stock, and sell it.

Follow up question .... Will I need to stay with the OEM steering wheel, or can I use an aftermarket one. Loosing radio and cruise buttons is no concern.

After market has several out there with the shift paddles, so I would say YES! Of course most are "Made in China" so be aware of that.

Just make sure that it states compatibility with the E-46 is all, mostly the spline count which I don't remember off the top of my head.

Having ran just the rear fog lamps for the wagon and the M3, I understand that you don't want to be messing around with the wiring. It took a couple of hours just to cut a single wire out of a harness that runs from the trunk lid all the way to the LCM.

I had to sort some wiring in the DME box to have the oil pressure and charge lights work properly. The car is a 2001 and the cluster is out of an 03. Naturally, there is a tamper dot, but not concerned. Still have the original cluster.

I like small steering wheels so currently using a thick 310mm wheel.

I have located a couple of SMG 46 M3s, but one is in southern Cali and the other is in Va Beach, Va. The Virginia one is red (FINALLY not a silver or black) and cheap. The Cali one is black, 3-4k more, but has a crack in the floor at the right rear subframe mount. Cleaner car and has a CSL style intake system, so might be a better package. Once back to OEM configuration, my current M3 will sell well.
