I have 2012 BMW X5 35d, i was told i need a DPF . There is 135K on the X5 , its a very costly repair around $4000 , i have seen online that another alternative is to clean out the filter without removing it , is that a solution that works . Not sure what to do . Any thoughts. THANK yOU.
Welcome to the Forum!
Normally there is a cleaning cycle, and this typically happens while driving at or around 65 MPH for 15-20 minutes constant.
This chap talks about how to do it two different ways: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbTNjc6FASU
You can also use Carly or other devices to "force" cycle the cleaning on the DPF.

I'd get a second opinion about needing a DPF. 135k is a bit early unless you were using up a lot of oil.
Can you tell us symptoms and what's going on? Many shops don't even know the difference between the DPF and DEF system.
And yes, they can be washed of the ash content that collects inside as a product of burning off the soot. Liquimoly makes a solution that is used with water. But for this, the DPF needs to be removed from the vehicle and washed with a solution in reverse flow. It will clear out most of the ash and then it will be like new.
Then after this process, you'd need to use a diagnostic tool to register a new DPF, so it knows that it's (like) new.
