Generator Fault came on after a burning smell in the engine compartment

Initially had a higher pitched whine in the engine that went away when RPM's went up, took the car for a spin and smelled a burning smell and a little bit of smoke coming up from the engine when I popped the hood, left it for 10 minutes and started it up and had a "Generator Fault!" pop up on the instrument cluster to the below the RPM gauge and a battery image pop up in the center of the display. Car drive's fine, the high pitched wine is gone but the "generator fault" is still illuminated. The car has had a new battery within the last 12 months so is this the alternator that just burned out, while the car battery slowly drains? (hasnt happeneed yet but just wanted to get some feedback if anyone has gone through this with a 2007 750 Li
    Thanks for your time all

Very likely that is where you are now. The bearings go, and then you are in failure mode. He won’t run long without the alternator.
