    ID this part

Not the fuel pump or the pressure regulator but the hockey puck like doohickey on the far left?

First, it's helpful to post year/model/etc. The part is a fuel pressure damper and is only found on early models. The part is no longer available. It's superseded and eliminated by PN 16121178823 which is a simple molded hose. BTW the other part is not a pressure regulator. It's also a fuel pressure damper (PN 16121178035) but that one is still available. That one may also be eliminated. Later cars did not come with either. No authoritative source says why they were there, but many suspect it was simple noise reduction.

    It is a dampener.
Its function is to prevent the pulses of the injectors and the pulsing of the the fuel pump from causing a resonation/stand off in the fuel flow.
I have removed the rust unit fitted on my M3 without apparent ill effects. ymmv.

Hello, similar pic and question as BERG Racing:

What is this item connected to the output side of the fuel pump? It doesn't look like the fuel absorber (as RealOEM calls it) or fuel pressure damper (as FCP euro calls it) or fuel pressure regulator (as ECS Tuning calls it); all three of these sources at least refer to the same part number (16121178035).

It looks like the FleetGuard FF5289 in-line fuel filter, but I don't want to just assume that

    think I could remove it?

Does your E30 have a fuel absorber (as RealOEM calls it) on it? I know a lot of people just bypass it

I'd have to agree on it being an added filter. Quick guess is that it replaced the "absorber" (#14, 16121178035) part. Note that at least some of those are not the factory clamps.

To replace that whole section, you'd need
    13531726960 #13 molded hose
13311713470 connection piece (double barbed straight piece), this replaces the absorber. Alternately, you could use a new "absorber" but it's a bit pricey.
    16121180409 bulk fuel hose 8x13mm, I believe that's a 1 meter length piece
    07129952104 12-15mm hose clamps, 4 pieces

thanks a lot for this thought out response, it's much appreciated.
I'm going to remove the extra in-line filter that someone added on, and just eschew the absorber. It'll be a straight run from the external fuel pump to the fuel filter in the engine bay
