I had an old version of INPA on my computer which worked, and then downloaded the Mike’s Easy BMW tools.
I couldn’t get it to work. I tried my old INPA, that stopped working too.
I then deleted my old INPA and the Mike’s downloaded INPA started working.
You may want to delete your current INPA before you download and install Mike’s INPA.
Im still not getting the black boxes, but inpa is reading my vin still? I don’t know what the deal is. Do you know how to turn off the light check for the front side lights.?

If INPA is reading the VIN it’s communicating with the DME.
Your connecting to the port under the hood, right?
Do you have burned out front side light? Replace them and the light check message will go away.

I have led halos installed, and they get power from the side lights. All my lights work normally

Alright. Then I suggest you reinstall "mike's Easy BMW Tools" on a clean Windows laptop.
    That is:
    1. first, remove any and all older versions of inpa, then reboot.

    2. Then download it and install "Mike's Easy BMW tools" zip file, and make sure the usb port on the laptop is configured right (See the many postings on this issue in the main Mike's easy BMW thread-.

    3. Then turn off your anti-virus and internet connection on the laptop, connect it to the car, turn key to position 2, and start up INPA : you should get connect and see those battery and ignition highlighted on...

Had the same problem, it ended up being corroded pins on the DME. Moisture accumulates in that box causing some of the pins on the DME to corrode.
