1988 BMW 325i Catalytic Converter question

hello, i have a 1988 bmw e30 325i convertible. When i bought the car the catalytic converter was cut off. I knew this when i bought the car. my question is how does this affect the idling since i assume one of the 02 sensors was cut off as well. Is there something i need to do for example--deleting the 02 sensor? Not sure what question i should ask on this. I don't want to replace the catalytic converter if i don't have to. When i bought the car--i had only planned to use it for parts--but the engine and 5 speed trans seems very strong so i decided to refurbish it. When i bought it--it had no headlights, no cluster, no rear diff, and no catalytic converter and a few other small things missing. So far i have been able to replace all the missing part. thanks for any suggestions--mark

The ECU will need the O2 sensor to manage the fuel mixture and is in the idle control circuit. But, it is mounted before the catalytic converter, so my GUESS is you can run without the cat.

No cat needed as the European car's didn't come with them from the factory unless special ordered. If you don't have the bung left behind, just head over to a muffler/exhaust shop so they can just weld a bung in. I would have them put a cherry bomb or even a resonator to the pipe just to take up the space.

thanks for both replies. it still has an upstream sensor. Should i keep that or remove it? what about the downstream 02 sensor. since the Cat was cut off--i assume it is gone with the old Cat. Will this affect idle or is there a way to delete it totally remove it ? thanks

A bung is where the sensor screws into.

On that car, there is no downstream sensor, only upstream. It's a very basic system, and pretty easy to work on.

If the space where the cat was is “filled” with some type of piping and the 02 sensor is still intact, You should be okay to run it as is unless you have to pass emissions in your state.
