Hi. Does anyone know the function of the black plastic cap at the rear of the oil sump cover? Mine is loose and was thoughtful of unmetered air .

when I remove that cap, I can see the flywheel at the rear of the engine of my E32 750. I drove some year without that cap. Here some pics where that cap goes in on a 750, maybe the same on your car http://www.bimmerboard.com/forums/posts/732523/

Thank you Shogun - appreciate your ever present thoughtful insights. Spoke with a close friend who is a BMW trained Mechanic, with the e34 oil sump gasket - if one lifts the RHD drivers side of the engine ( undo both Eng Mounts and Trans Mount ) one can tilt the pan and out it comes. No need to remove subframe nor pump.
