89 635 SLS, keep or remove - long term value

    Hello everyone,

I just had the embarrassment today of bringing my 89 635 and new rear shocks to be installed to a mechanic, only to get a call from him later saying hey, you have the SLS system and the shocks you gave me won't fit. It seems one of my rear shocks is leaking and the car's tail is dragging. I can get new rear SLS shocks for it but want opinions on any potential future value impact of swapping over. My car is in fantastic shape and just hit 57k miles. It is 100% original save for the radio and the original radio is saved in a box for the car.

    Thank you,

    Paul

Paul, I am one town over in Weston. The SLS set up is nice when it works but a PIA if not. I removed mine by capping off the lines, removing the oil from the pump and disconnecting the pump and sway bar sensor. I have everything if I sell the car and the owner wants to convert back.

My advice is to swap out the system, won't cost much more, you already have the shocks. I will send a PM with my phone if you care to call. Somewhere I have the parts list to swap out.

Thank you so much. Did you do it yourself or have a shop do it. Unfortunately a back injury has robbed me of being able to do these sorts of jobs myself anymore. I'm ok in the engine bay but underneath is iffy for me now

Those SLS shocks are rare, so even if you do a conversion, keep all the parts for the next owner.

I ended up sticking with the SLS. I was able to buy new SLS shocks over the summer from Pelican parts. They said they were two of the last 5 in the country. I had them replaced and then ended up needing the accumulators which are not available in the US. I ended up getting a pair from Germany and once installed, my suspension was fixed. The old shocks were tossed. She is sitting in the garage now avoiding salt season here in New England. It has 57,309 miles on it now and still has new car smell in the interior. I wanted to keep it original. I am going to be downsizing and moving states next year so will probably put her up for sale when the weather gets better. You can see how it sits in my garage now vs some previous shots https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjzUzzm

Why not hold off on any sale until you see what storage options exist where you move to. Also go with classic car insurance if not already. I think you will regret selling the car at some point.
