I recently purchased perhaps the riskiest used bmw possible: a water damaged e63 M6 with no key from copart (clean title somehow ). The initial investment was low and I was looking for a challenge to push my diy skills after finishing up a 135i engine rebuild project. I originally contacted the dealer to get a key made but after checking in ista, the vin does not match the body. It seems that a dme, cas combo was swapped into the vehicle presumably due to water damaged components. I pulled the CAS module and found that it was a CAS 3 from an 08 m6. This 2006 car should have a CAS 2. I ordered a full starting kit off eBay with matching keys, CAS, dme, keyless go module, and key cylinders from a 2006 M6. I understand this will allow me to start the car without any coding however, I'd like to do this right with all modules in agreement on vin, mileage, etc. Does anyone know what all I will need to do to get these modules aligned?
My understanding is I will need to:
-update dme vin by flashing with winkfp
-update CAS vin number with r270 programmer or similar
I currently have bimmergeeks standard tools, ista, k+dcan cable. Will probably buy a r270 programmer soon. I've been reading forum posts constantly and making good use of the search button since the car arrived. I'm sorry if I missed any common information that has been hashed out already.
I am not sure which modules contain mileage data and how the car will react to different readings from different modules. I'd like to have the correct chassis mileage without a tamper dot if possible. The starting kit has a slightly lower mileage than the chassis (100k vs 115k).
NEVER buy a water damaged car. What were you thinking?
