    Spring In Oil Filter Housing?

    2014 328i xdrive

First BMW and getting used to all the different configurations as compared to cars here in the US.

May be a silly question, but I have a spring in the oil filter housing but when I watch videos of oil changes it just change the two rubber gaskets and off you go with the new filter.

Is there suppose to be a spring? Where does it go in relation to the filter? The one in there is curved slightly....any insight/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Because the oil filter cap is broken.

When the center support (cage) detaches from the cap the end plug and spring will pop out.

    You need a new cap. 11 42 7 525 334, Oil Filter Housing Cover

OK so the spring is actually meant to be in the cage? I thought that might be the case because some of the pictures I have seen seem to show a spring in the cage.

    Thanks!

good diagram....but it doesnt show the cage housing that goes through the filter. I learned that inside the cage there is a spring.

question for you....is the gasket on the cap suppose to go all the way down to the lip or one rotation up?

I have seen a number of pictures showing both .....

If you go to realoem.com and enter the last 7 of your VIN, you can get the BMW part number of the cap for your specific car.

There will be a groove that the large o-ring will sit in, just pay attention to the old one. Normally it goes at the top of the threads, that way it will seal inside the canister.

Also that spring is part of the anti-drain back to keep oil inside the filter, if it's pooped loose then you will need a new cap.
