Hi,
My 2004 e46 330ci convertible with 150k miles is making loud ticking sound. I am also getting misfire error codes in cylinder 5 and 6.
I owned the car for past 10 years and changed lot of parts like CCV upgrade, pre-cat O2 sensors, DISA valve, entire cooling system upgrade, water pump and pulleys, new radiator, fuel pump and fuel filter, hydraulic pump for SMG gear box, valve cover gasket etc
I recently changed spark plugs, ignition coils and cylinder 5 fuel injector. I change engine oil by myself and make use of Castrol 5w-30 full synthetic oil only.
When I purchased the car with 84k miles in 2012, the car had starting problem and required multiple attempts to crank. But after replacing fuel injector in cylinder 5, the car is always starting at first attempt
But the loud ticking metal sound is bothering me.
I took the car to a German auto shop and they told me that the compression is out of sync only on cylinder 5 and metal ticking sound is coming from lower part of the engine. They suggested replacing the engine ( which I am not so keen to do ) or rebuild the engine.
Could the sound be due to piston rod knock metal bearing wearing out? Check the video here https://youtu.be/JDOySsMj7Uc and https://youtu.be/P2L7uVzM54A
Do you have any pointers or suggestions for me?
It sure sounds a lot like rod knock. Best rando guess is that you spun a rod bearing. Drain and check your oil. Do you see swirly boob glitter? How about your oil pressure?

Unfortunately I have to agree. You can often simply remove the oil filter to check for glitter in the oil and to see if there are any larger bits stuck in the filter.
