I just got started working on my new project E30, a 1987 325e. I removed the rear wheels (planning on doing wheel bearing replacements all around) and found this guy just sitting inside my rear spring where it connects to the control arms ( i think they're the control arms im still learning). I circled where I found it in one of the pictures.
There is a part number on it but its too worn for me to read. Any Ideas? I know its not in the right place whatever it is

That looks like it might be a coil spring booster. It gets wedged between the coils to provide some lift. You'll typically see these when your springs should be replaced, but you have no money to do so.
