Don’t think they will be going back on!
That looks awesome! They easy enough to remove?
Wait, they’re body color painted?!?

This seems more like a "grass is greener" mod - something that initially looks "cool" because it is unique, different than what you are used to. But frankly I think it looks a bit silly seeing the bends in the steel hoops and the gaps at the base of the plastic trim... it just looks unfinished
Many moons ago, I removed my covers and painted them gloss black to match other gloss black accents I had on my particular car. If you like the body color look, I think they would look better if you just painted the covers body color and re-installed them. Personally I think they'd look best black

Honestly I would love to strip out the entire interior and go more bare bones. I’d go old school C2 Corvette or Cobra theme. Then those basic hoops would really fit.
I still have not fully decided. The good news is only a couple of tabs were broken so they should back together easily if I end up painting them.
I don't mind the look at all. Provides that old school roll bar look. Yet, I kind of view this as a no harm change from OEM since the original plastic covers can be re-installed with little effort.
I think that looks cool. You can probably get some rubber trim for that gap around the base. My only concern is my windscreen might not fit well without the housing, but i only use it in the winter.

It is certainly a way to make an inexpensive cosmetic change. One other I would suggest is to remove the black dealer decal under your "Z4" emblem.
