Hi!
I am hoping someone can help me figure out a very weird noise.
I have this almost like whining noise coming what seems to be the rear of my car. The noise happens ONLY when I push down on the gas. It starts to be noticeable around 30MPH and gets high pitched as I get to 80MPH.
What’s weird is the noise doesn’t change pitch or anything with RPMs. If I am going at any speed 40, 60, 80, etc and let go of the gas the noise stops.
So, your post is a little confusing. You said it gets high pitched at 80 mph, but then you said it doesn’t change pitch.
Pitch means the frequency of the sound. Low pitch (bass notes) or high pitch (bird chirp).
So, did you really mean that the sound VOLUME LEVEL increases as you go faster?
Also, when you say the pitch doesn’t change with RPMs, is that engine RPMs, or tire RPMs? You can run your engine at 3000 RPM but depending on the gear your transmission is in, the road speed (tire RPMs) would be much different.
A metal scraping would be something that would not change PITCH as RPMs change, but would change VOLUME LEVEL as RPMs change. So, it could be something loose/hanging underneath the car, near a rotating component (like a driveshaft or axle) and as road speed increases, the moving air pushes it against the rotating component.
Just a guess…
