2008 - 328Xi front axle noise when backing and applying brakes (is this normal)

161,000 miles on my 328Xi drive.

for the past 5 months or so the (4X4!); ABS; BRAKE lights pop on and off.

I have noticed a chattering noise/vibration when backing out the the garage/driveway when applying the brakes.
This noise/vibration is NOT felt/heard when in DRIVE.

Today I checked the calipers and they appeared to be secure.

When rotating the front wheels back and forth I do hear a noise further up the axle.

Is this noise normal?

What are some possible reasons for the chattering/vibration when in Reverse and applying brakes?
