F30 Fuel Tank Leakage - Warranty Extension

    Great news!

Today I received a letter from BMW NA indicating that the emission warranty has been extended for the fuel tank, to 15 years/150k miles. This is to cover the issue with the top tank seal that fails, causing fuel vapor and/or liquid fuel to leak out.

Our 2014 F30 328i has this issue. If the fuel tank is filled, vapors will leak out of the tank and into the car, and you can even smell gas outside the car, outdoors.

The repair involves removing and replacing the gas tank. I’m so glad that it will be covered, because it’s a $2000 repair.

The letter also says that if you paid to get the tank repaired that they will reimburse you for the expense, provided you can show proof.

    UPDATE:

I took the car to the local BMW dealership, and they replaced the gas tank, free of any charge. They even provided a loaner car for two days while the repair was being done.

Well, I searched for the code listed in the letter from BMW (B-ELWR Fuel Tank EM15Y150M) and found this link:

    https://dot.report/bulletins/10212779

There are quite a few models listed there other than the F30.

Check the link I posted on 11/20. It lists many chassis and models. I suspect the tank is common in all of them, or at least the deficient design of the tank.
