My son’s car is getting the yellow gear warning on the dash. Runs idle fine but has to be jumped to start it. While running he drove a short distance without any problems. Once he cuts it off, it has to be jumped again. I replaced the battery about 3 weeks ago. What could this be?

Well, my son did jump start it when he called me and it ran. He parked it as there was an unknown problem until I could get there. Obviously, the starter was on its way out because when he tried to jump it again, it would not start from jumping it. So, I drove up and and checked (with a multi meter) the battery and alternator. Both were good. The car would only click now when the start button was pressed......hence, the sound of a bad starter. I didn't have one with me, so I whacked it a few times and voila! We were able to drive the 80 miles to get the car home. Next day, I installed the starter after about 5 - 6 hours! Whew!!!

So the gear icon is a tranny error correct ? Not related to replacing starter. When my starter went out it just went out. One morning car just won’t start. 165k on original starter.

Maybe something electronic happened when it went out. I don't know, but once the starter was changed there have been no other problems.
