Hi Everyone,
Recently purchased this 1982 320i with 137K and fairly unknown history. It needs a bit of work, but it drove the 50 minute ride home like a champ. (Won't start now, but that will be for another thread).

Okay, now for my question. Currently, I am doing some rust prevention. I have sandblasted and will powder coat the supporting frames of the headlights as well as the glass holding frame. I have also removed and cleaned up the roller guides, notches and securing plate for the hood. These bits:
41611826325 - Securing Plate
51231833187 - Roller Guides
51231833191 - Notch

They looked pretty bad so to prevent any further degradation to the metal I figured, "why not?", let's clean these up. As far as the finish goes, I have looked at these parts online and it looks like they are zinc chromate plated/ yellow zinc chromate plated. Can anyone confirm this? Is the below picture accurate to how it came OEM?

Would it be crazy to do this to the roller guide since I would have to drill out the washer/stud holding the rubber wheel before having it plated? (I work in manufacturing so I have access to essentially remake this after it gets plated).
Thanks all,
Kayla
I'm going to be cleaning up the same parts on my car since I got dinged pretty bad at a recent concours. I don't know if they're zinc chromate or cadmium plated, but the picture you posted is what they should look like when new.
Would it be crazy to do it? That depends on what you want to do with the car. Your car looks nice; and if the engine compartment is just as clean and nice, then it might be, but that's up to you.
that incredibly pristine dash votes yes
I had all my bolts replated when I built my car. You can leave the rubber on and they can still plate it.st
Not to bring back an old post, but I did end up getting the hood mounting parts zinc chromate plated. They look great which means everything else need to be cleaned and plated...
Sandblasted the hood mounting parts and headlight rings/holders.

The roller guide was also repainted. Just had to mask off the rubber part.

Head light rings were powder coated gloss black and the silver headlight retaining rings also went out to get plated, but I forgot to take a picture of those.
Thanks for the input.

Looks great - good work. Can you share the cost to do the zinc chromate plating on the hood mounting parts?
Cheers,
Shawn
Hey Shawn,
I can't give you a cost on the plating since I had it done through my place of work which has a good relationship with the plating company and they did it all for free. The plating got done at the Bass Plating Company in Bloomfield, CT.
Sorry to be of no help.
Kayla
