1985 BMW e30 318i sedan auto swap options/advice?

Hello, i have a 1985 BMW 318 sedan auto which i am restoring with my son. The engine in the car is super weak and i would like to know what my options are for engine swapping. I have looked into it a little and have seen that e36 M3 engines are the best, not super complex swaps. Can i swap a e36 M3 engine with auto trans or would manual be the easiest? Where would be the best place to look for salvage cars, what to look out for, and how much to expect to pay? if you have any other suggestions for a semi decent engine swap for the e30 i would be interested in hearing that too.
