correct Pentosin container level info, since the owners manual is a bit confusing

E32 level pentosin tank with level control system
One often hears about leakages of pentosin in H31 BKV/level control system. Often also after the long winter storage break, where the vehicles rear something sank, because the regulating valves are not correctly on zero point adjusted or something leaks and then the Pentosin from rear axle returns to the front via the return line into the Pentosin container, that overflows, since also in the cover a ventilation hole is...
If the level is set CORRECTLY, the container/reservoir CANNOT overflow.
No matter if the accumulators are OK or defective, because the correct level is ALWAYS set for pressureless accumulators.

Filling and venting instructions according to workshop manual:

Fill pentosin to approx. 25mm below upper edge of reservoir.
Start engine
Load the vehicle with 150 kg near the center of the trunk lid.
Turn steering wheel 3 times from stop to stop
Switch off engine
Lift rear axle
After approx. 2 minutes check oil level at the tank + correct if necessary
Target level 25-30mm below upper edge of tank

End of workshop manual

or simply siphon off liquid from the tank when the vehicle is parked for a longer period of time over the winter, until there is enough reserve for possible backflow.

Correct filling level- Pentosin container
Pentosin container level control

Since there is still some confusion about the pentosin level in the tank, I have translated the BMW German into colloquial language.
The prerequisite is an intact brake and level system.
With the engine running, unscrew the cap from the reservoir. If you can see the green oil in the strainer, the system is hopelessly OVERFILLED. As long as both systems are in order, there are no problems. But as soon as defects of brake / level system creep in, the tank overflows slowly or faster, depending on the defect. Also, just lifting the car up on a two-post lift is enough to cause the reservoir to overflow.

Adjusting the oil level:
The cap is already off, turn off the engine, then remove the strainer, and with a syringe lower the oil level in the tank to about 5cm from the upper edge, then press the brake pedal about 20 times, the oil level rises, immediately a sign that the pressure accumulator is o.k.
Use the syringe to lower the Pentosin level to 5 cm below the top rim and lift the rear of the car so that the wheels hang freely in the air, i.e. do not touch the ground. Then rush to the front, and watch the oil level for about 3 minutes, it will rise, have the syringe ready just in case. After the 3 minutes, the level reservoirs will also be empty.
Now install the strainer back in, and fill the oil level to the point where the oil can just be seen in the strainer, then it will fit without the reservoir overflowing in case of defects or repairs, such as simply lifting it up on a two-post lift. This filling height is approximately the same as the mm specifications from BMW. Cover it, and drain the car.
