I've upgraded the speakers in my Z4, which hasn't made much difference. I've read the Harmon-Kardon DSP amplifier is the weak part of the system, and so I'd like to swap it out for something both better sounding and more powerful. From what I've read, the H-K amplifier is fed via an optical input, which means the head unit has an optical output. My question is - Does the head unit also have analog outputs, or am I stuck having to buy a mega-buck amp with an optical input?
Some HK amps are tunable. That is, the amp permits the changing of the model specific tuning profile. As an example, the F22/23 HK sound system sounds better with the tuning profile from a 4 series.
I own an F22 with the HK system. I too replaced all the speakers and said “meh.” I ended up replacing the amp with an amp from Audiotech-Fischer, a German company. The amp is easily tuned using the company’s free software on a laptop. I’d check the company’s products.
