Rim discoloration.jpg
I have a 2001 M5. Aftermarket 18 inch rims. Prior owner dented a couple rims. One included significant damage to the outside rim. A local shop with a wheel straightener warned me that the heating process would discolor the rim (see picture). But preferable to the bumpy ride. Rides perfect now. These are aftermarket rims that I can't seem to find any more, and if I were going to replace the rims I'd likely get the 'real' BMW rims. But these will do for now.
Now I'm trying to figure out what my options are for cleaning this up. The 'clean looking' part right along the edge is actually where the chrome plating is completely gone.
Wondering what my options are for making this look a little better... Any paint-type products that might help? Silver-ish would be better than burnt chrome...
Maybe I sand down the blackened chrome and remove it...
Thoughts?
its a machined lip......get the wheels machined? depends how deep its daMAGED....or just powdercoat them but u wont have a machined look
The burnt stuff looks like it's just a lacquer or clear powder coat. Can you catch a fingernail on it as you go from normal to the burnt area? If so, scrap it off. You can type the wheel off after sanding the area smooth and reapply a clear coat to help protect the aluminum.
It's definitely not chrome.
