Selling the engine/trans that originally came in my 1977 E21. I pulled them to do an M42 swap last summer.
Miles unknown, but the clutch was replaced very recently and still grabs great and the motor cranks + runs evenly.
No core mechanical issues or notable wear on internals. It has a known good thermostat, valves all in spec (checked, all eccentrics are in good shape and no individual cylinder was uneven from the others), K-Jetronic holds the mix really solid under all driving conditions (tested with wideband), no vacuum leaks, alternator works great, newer starter, etc. Lambda/O2/mixture control computer system has been gone through and made to work properly again.
Was always very happy to putt around town, rev in the hills, go 80 on the highway. Did not have to top up oil at all during its tenure with me in my car. Healthy torque for what you can expect out of these motors. The car was originally an in-town car owned by an older couple and cared for by local shops, no known previous abuse nor does it show any signs of it.
Only 2 known issues: 1. the temp sensor at the front of the engine meant to trigger the electric fan is no good, and 2. the vacuum pot on the distributor doesn't work.
The transmission is a bit loud in 1st but it shifts awesome, very easy to fancy-man flick-shift it with your fingertips. No grinds.
Perfect candidate to repower another E21 or E12.
$500 obo for all, available for pick up from the Eugene, Oregon area. I cannot deliver, I don't have a truck - unless you want to pay for my time + a U-Haul within a reasonable radius.
How do you like the M42? I have a 75 2002 that I am restoring and am not sure whether to keep the M10 that is modded with dual webers, cam and headers or do an M42/44 or a BMW 6 or a swap from another brand.
