did BMW have anything to do with development of the 1jz/2jz engines?

I think I posted this in the wrong forum and I only got one reply lol

Anyways, my question was, did Bimmer have anything to do with the development of the 1jz/2jz engines?
The reason I asked is because I've heard that the flywheel from the e36/e46 generation will bolt directly on to a 2jz.

Basically, they have the same flywheel bolt pattern.

In my first thread, someone replied thar they had nothing to do with it, but I just wanted to hear your thoughts on this.

There was no cooperative work between BMW and Toyota on these engines.

A more likely scenario is that BMW and Toyota simply picked a set of nice round numbers for their crankshaft bolt pattern and diameter. And OEMs typically outsource the clutch and flywheel, so it is possible that while BMW and Toyota didn't directly collaborate on the engines, they may have had a single supplier work from similar designs to supply this part.

BMW - where "Why doesn't everybody build cars the way they do?" meets "Why can't they build a car the same way everyone else does it?"

"Interesting question"....is not a good thread title that members like to click. In future please include the problem in the thread title. You will get much more of a response to something specific like “My battery is dead and I can't unlock the car” or “How do I get the electric rear seats out”, than something like “What is this?”.

I think Rick Kemp did the head design on both the 1 and 2 JZ. He had been a lead on the 7m, and the TRD/ professional race stuff.

He didn't design the heads, but did work at TRD USA. He specializes in porting Toyota heads. A while back, you could send your head to get ported, polished and built by him.

No, BMW did not have anything to do with the design of the JZ engine(s)
