BMW Z3 Early Redline

My BMW z3 2000 2.3 has about 50k miles on it and is pretty fresh, for somereason it redlines at about 5500rpm!! I don't know if it has a Rev limiter, is supposed to do this, or something is wrong but my tach goes all the way to 7 and it even feels early when driving it. When it does redline at 5500 it backfires quite alot. I can't fully tell though because I prefer my engine in one piece

Go to any auto parts store and use their ODB2 scanner to check for faults. It will give you a code/s and you check what that means. I would be hesitant to drive it though so if you have a friend with a scanner ask him to come over and check it yourself. Or buy one from amazon. The cheaper scanner only will cost about $25.

Are you doing this test on the road or when stationary? Also, is it a 'hard' rev limiter, or could it be fuel starvatinon at higher revs?

I bet the check engine light is on? Or other lights?
Do a diagnostic scan with BMW software in all the modules, not just basic OBD2 as mentioned earlier.
