So, I just finished a complete rebuild of the N51 engine on the 2012 328i and after I started the car I got no sound from the speakers, looked in the trunk and the HIFI amp was in a puddle of water from leaving the trunk semi opened when the battery was out. I now know how to apply12v to get it opened from the Junction Box under the glove compartment grey wire. But it is too late as the amp is not doing anything. Opened it up cleaned it, dried it, and tested the components, did not find any shorts that are obvious, could be in the IC chips, don't know. So, I found a bunch of different ones on eBay looked the same, but some are from X5, X3, X1, and other cars. I think I may have found one from a E92, have to look. I read that you have to get it adapted to the car you're installing to only if it's from a different model. Mine being a 328i I have to find one from the same. If I don't how hard is it to do the adaptation, I do have a Autel 708 bidirectional and can read and adapt a lot of things. I went into the menu for the amp, but it could not reach it for obvious reasons. Can you guys give me some advice on what I need to do and maybe point me in the right directions, this is for my son's car, and I do all the heavy lifting. Thanks in advance for any replies.

OK so you can use any model BMW HIFI amp in my case from an X1 on a 328i both from 2012. Numbers don't mean jack. Just a gimmick. Ignorance and lack of info. opened up the amp and it is identical. I think this is valid for any year HIFI. There is no programming possible, dealer cannot program it as you cannot even communicate with the amp. So, most people are in the dark about this and when they buy their replacements, in my case the numbers that realoem.com showed are priced at over 100 dollars used. The ones from the X1 through 5 are priced at 40 dollars and above. Why that is beats me. It's just bad info. Well now you got good info. This is tested and confirmed.

im having same prob, 2006 330i. . .. found amp in pool no lights at all within amp. optics good through the whole daisy chain. and i have voltage on the harness sideof the amp plug. i need to replace but wanted to search scrap yards.. wasnt sure if i had to find a specific serial number or year/ model of vehicle to match mine. or if i can jut fine a identical looking one in a BMW and slap it in there. turns out the previous owner had the same issue and replaced the amp once before as i have 2 in my trunk compartment. he said when it went out the first time he got a new one on ebay and it worked for awhile then went out agian and he didnt know why. But when i took owner ship of the vehicle i found the amp in its rightful location and in a half inch at least of water " ISSUE FOUND " lol..,., i couldnt save and revive either amps.. I NEED MUSIC please BMW gurus send me some advice

Have you tested the wires at the harness by the amplifier? As long as the head unit is outputting voltage you should be able to drop in an aftermarket 6 channel amplifier to bridge the gap to the speakers.
I used a diagram someone had posted online and all of the wires colors were accurate for the most part. It might be worth your while to consider this. I just recently by passed the plug and play harness for the JL 6 channel amplifier and it was quite easy.
