Hello everyone, I just picked up a new to me 2019 540 x drive. I've got around 27,000 miles on it, brand new RF tires and brakes.
Previously I've owned 2018 330GT, 2016 328 xdrive and a 2013 328 xdrive.
I haven't had a chance to really open it up yet. I've just done a few trips on the highway and some local driving. I'm literally babying the car and my average MPG's I'm getting is 22 to 22.1. Is that correct or is there a problem? I can't believe driving the way I've been driving is giving that horrible fuel consumption. I'd hate to see when I start hammering down on it. My previous 3 series's all had the 4 banger engine but I was getting well over 30mpg passing 40mpg on the highway at 80mph in comfort mode.
Is anyone else here getting the same mpg on your 540 without really driving it?
22mpg is ridiculous IMO. I also have 2002 CLK 430 with a V8 and that car gets 20mpg without the modern tech of the BMW.
Curious if ymmv

Did you read any of the car reviews for this model? The avg MPG is listed all over the place. Unless there’s some odd condition…the CAFE standards listed are pretty much in the ball park. City/urban driving will be around the low figure given…highway will be around the high side…and combined will be somewhere in the middle.

I have a 2018 M5 that I bought CPO in May 2021 with 24k miles. Twin turbo 4.4L V8. I have put 11,000 miles on it since and the car computer tells me my average is 21.0 mpg. I drive gently 99% of the time but cruise on the highway at 75-80, have done plenty of full throttle runs, and on very rare occasions hit speeds of 130, 140, 150, with 162 the record. I use only 93 octane and do not live in a big city so I am rarely in heavy traffic and the majority of driving is secondary road or highway.
I attribute what I consider great mpg to the 8 speed trans. We had an CPO 08 E61 535xi for 10 years and averaged 21 mpg with it. Twin turbo 3.0L I6. Trans was 6 speed auto.
Our 21 Cayenne S has a 2.9L twin turbo with over 400 hp and an 8 speed trans and it has averaged 21.1 mph since new. It is 99% gently driven but also cruises at 75-80 and has seen 130, 140, with 146 mph the record.
My guess is the OP does a much bigger percentage of city driving or traffic driving since his mpg is at the city average rating. Some say areas with winter formulation gas lose a couple of mpg during that time of year.
Thanks for the information. I was driving mostly local roads with some highway mixed in. The car has brand new 19 inch tires filled with nitrogen. Discovered free nitrogen fills at Costco and increased to correct tire pressure. I'm getting 24.6 mpg and I'm in NJ with the winter gas, so it may improve. That's not bad for the performance and comfort. Nowhere near the 330GT but understandable.
Just got an Emergency call malfunction error on the dash this evening. I'm reading it had to do with either a battery failure or leak from the shark fin causing board failure. I'm hoping this is covered under the factory warranty. If not I'll be replacing it myself seeing other people were paying over $1800 to replace that board.
