    M62tub44

Why can't bmw make an engine that doesn't leak oil and coolant is it just me or is everyone agreeing with me iv spent a fortune on trying to stop this engine from losing its guts all over my drive its costing me loads to clean my drive at the moment I have replaced the crank oil seal I have replaced the rocker gaskets ,pcv ,everything that has oil running through it or breathers iv replaced. Its also had all the water pipes replaced so really it should be bomb proof now and as if it just came off the bmw line at the factory or should I say the land rover line in 2003 does anybody else out there have an m62tub44 engine that just loves to leak its crazy although I do love the engine its so smooth but I just hope one day it will stop leaking its guts everywhere and then I don't have to keep checking oil and water every day .thank for reading my whining post but please reply and let me know im not the only one 🙂

    they leak....everything, everywhere.

that said - once you fix the leaks its imperative to also fully clean the engine bay after repairs.....that's a step often missed, and it's amazing how much oil will find its way down to the ground after a leak has been repaired.

at least with an engine that leaks, you'll know when its empty - it won't be leaking then!

At least with BMW engines you can reseal them and go another 7 years or so before the rubber changes its state of being.

Get an Italian car and have hopeless electrics from the very beginning

Yes, the M62 leaks everything, everywhere. Sadly, unless you've had the engine out, and resealed everything, you're not going to beat that. Just offhand, you've missed the coolant cover plate at the back of the engine, in the transmission bellhousing, the seams between block, head and timing covers, whichever crank seal you DIDN'T do, the oil pan gasket, the valley pan, o-rings on the two pipes in the "V", water pump gasket, the front manifold cover plate (air leaks), the crankcase vent tube from front to back of engine (and the fragile plastic oil separator it attaches to under the timing cover)....I could go on, of course.

But think of it this way: It's still a whole lot better than the Rover (GM) V8.

Or an English car. They stop leaking when they run out of whatever they’re leaking.

That's why BMW thought the M62 was a good fit for the Range Rover.

The M62 is a wonderful engine. Leaks and timing rails are its weak points.
Every engine has its issues. For reliability, the M62tu is the superior of its successors. Your M62 will still be alive long after the last N63 is kaput.

That said, make mine S62. Now THAT is an engine. Guess it's about time for me to do my timing rails, and maybe my connecting rod bearings for the second time.
OR, I could go out and mortgage my soul for a new car that doesn't make me smile half as much? (Spent $1300 today for my second set of the last year, of Michelin PS4S's for it...nothing makes me smile more than sticky rubber....oh, THAT doesn't sound good, does it? )

Thanks Chris! Chris has helped me tremendously with my very first Bimmer an M62 “Tub.” Now I have 2. Now I am intrigued by the S62! It’s a crazy market for cars right now, but, I am on the hunt! I must say I loved my 98 M62 (400k) which I still have enough to make me go out and get an ‘01 with a quarter of the miles… Can’t wait until the right S62 is obtainable!
    Thanks Chris!
