e46 to e36 swap

Hi All! New E36 owner here. Just picked up a '97 E36 with a blown head gasket. Looking to replace engine and found a good deal on a engine and tranny out of a e46. How much of a hassle am I looking at on the conversion? Owner of E46 will supply DME, Harness, keys and anything else I want off the car. He also says it's a m52b28 engine but the e46 had the m52tub28 engine don't they?

Swapping dual vanos into single vanos is not usually easy. If you want easy, buy a single vanos motor.

E46 had M52TU - it is a completely different DME setup. You will need to build or buy an adapter harness. M52TU used a cable to operate the electronic potentiometer on the throttle body, so you shouldn't need to retrofit a DBW pedal but electronically it will still require a fair amount of work to retrofit

Or change the headgasket on your existing engine.
