Hey guys,
Used to have an M4 with standard transmission, and was looking at getting back with the BMW family. I've been appreciating older cars a lot more lately and I think I've settled on wanting to look for an 850i/850Ci. Since I've just started looking not too long ago, I'm not really sure what the market has been for these cars and in what sort of conditions. I've seen sold ones anywhere between $16k, to $30k, to well above that for a manual 850i with sell dates between 1-2 years ago, so I'm not quite sure where they're sitting. Tried to search recent sell prices here as well but most sold ones have the price taken down and the only one I saw were at $16k and $25k over the past year.
Can anyone point me in the right direction in what I should be reasonably considering for a purchase?
Thank you!
- Frederick
Really depends on mileage and condition.
Are you after a restoration project, or a turn key car?
Better places to watch out for these cars are the E31 Facebook groups and Craigslist

More of a turnkey car. I don't care too much about aesthetics or interior and don't mind repairing some small things but I'm looking for something that's a driver off the bat.
Yup that's mainly where I'm looking but just want to make sure I know what I'm looking at.
You can see a bunch of useful data points from auction history on bring a trailer and cars & bids. Obviously there is a fair amount of variation based on condition and history, but you’ll 100% know the selling prices regardless.

Thanks, BaT I feel like usually only carries the higher end range of the sales market. Cars & Bids I looked at as well previously and is where I got some of my price points. But even there, in '20 one sold for $31k, then '21 one sold for ~$17k and in the same year another sold for $31k. All running and good condition, and both ones that sold in '21 are even similar mileage but one sold almost 2x more. Hard to believe the spread is that massive between similar cars. That's why I don't know if those sub-$20k are unicorn finds, or if that's what I should looking for keeping up with my search.
I would say a project 6 speed manual in rough condition is around 12 to 15k.
Sorted manual anywhere from 28 to 35k depending on mileage.
Suffice it to say the time to buy is now!
Cheapest manual I have seen was $700.00

I bought my 850 with an automatic from Brian for $2,950
Thanks for the replies guys, gives me a good idea for my search!

A reasonably sorted 6 speed will be $25-30k+
The recent $16k car was an anomaly, as the owner had to return to France immediately.
If you find one below $20k, prepare to add another $10k sorting it out.
