This sure looked like a doozy when discovering the cause of the busted bolt under my pedals. Hopped in today to tighten my steering coupler (which doesn't seem to exist... '87 quirk?) and discovered a peculiar busted bolt head. Dropped the kick panel to find the obvious culprit: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...ng-35311151990
The spring was just dangling there. Whoops. Must be a gift from the Bavarian gods for driving spiritedly home the other night.
The function of the part is obvious, however my clutch rebounds so strong that it makes me wonder if it's just a redundancy. Am I playing with fire to take my boy out on an extended test drive?

Does anyone know if the E36 would have the same spring? I've got a hellrot version of that chassis, courtesy of my cousin getting t-boned from a Porsche 911 a decade ago. Part number seems specific to the E30's timeline, I'm having a hard time finding an E36-specific PN.
I have plenty of other things I'd rather be making posts for, but I have to start with the oddity staring me in the face.
For example, my clutch pedal vibrates unless I rest my foot on it. I'd been wondering what this could be. Perhaps this spring is the answer? Engine bay vibration seems normal. Hardly a misfire since it's been stretched out again. Engine mounts are fairly newish.
The more I think about it, the more it seems like the clutch vibration question was answered via this spring. Main quandary amidst my over explanation is back to the start, how vital is this spring?
Thanks folks looking forward to moving onto the next thing.
I've just removed them... As I've seen to many shred the clutch feed hose.
Someone around here, BEN GERMAN makes an introverted unit.

Interesting, thanks for the expedient feedback Yahweh! Maybe I'll make another unrelated post by the end of the day glad I posted here before overnighting that "seemingly" overpriced spring.
I have more integral steering quirks to work out before bothering to install an introverted unit.
Just to round out our Q&A, have you had any problems after removing the spring? Does your clutch vibrate ever so slightly since removal?
Clutch's have always worked as normal. You may have some chatter in the pedal since it has no tension at it at its rest position.

I never had trouble either but the sell springs in the wall at any local auto parts place. Just pick the length and stiffness you want
Interesting, superj. Given the nature of the spring design, I'm not sure exactly how I'd rig any random spring into that location. I'll try to explore the concept further whilst I have the kick panel dropped for my cluster repair(s).
