I live in Phoenix where it is just a little warm in the summer , and my 2000 540iT starts and runs just fine......usually the temp needle has already moved up a little off the stop before I get into the car.
But when the weather gets cooler, like now, and the temp in the morning is down in the chilly 50's, the car will start and then immediately stop. If I keep jazzing the gas peddle for about 5 seconds then the motor will keep running and then idle nicely after another 5 seconds !!? then it will start and run well for the rest of the day
.
Is there a cold start system on these M62TU motors? And is it possible that it is sticking when it is cold, but just for a few seconds?
Or is there something else that will cause this problem.....ONLY when its cold?

This would happend to me in the colder months when I first purchased my 740i with the M62TU. It was due to the intake gaskets needing to be replaced. Does it run rough when cold started? I also had to keep my foot on the gas for a few seconds to keep it running.

No cold start valve. The engine computer measures the coolant temp to determine the fuel mixture.
Purplecty may have a clue.
Ed in San Jose '97 540i 6 speed aspensilber over aubergine leather. Build date 3/97. Golden Gate Chapter BMW CCA Nr 62319.
Also check the throttle body for carbon build up.
Intake gaskets get old and not as pliable.. so they don't seal until they get warm and more pliable as the car warms. This results in leaked vacuum. Will also throw codes when it gets bad enough.

A great ending is all you'll see..

Thanks for all the suggestions; an air leak seems the logical answer, so I will get into it this weekend.
It is strange that the car goes to idle after 5-10 seconds, and I really don't think that if it is an air leak at the manifolds or throttle body, that they would get warm and seal in 10 seconds. But I will check them anyway.
And this is a good time to swap out the horrible valve covers for a pair that I got painted.
