I have a 2016 535i with 19" factory wheels. I would like to carry a spare tire even though the car has run flats. Do I need to get a 19" wheel for a spare?
I believe (don't quote me) you need at least an 18" wheel to clear the calipers. That said ECS Tuning has a rather expensive spare kit with all you need.
You can mount any size wheel/tire combo that is listed in your owners manual (and door jamb label). There’s also the optional “donut” spare tire that BMW offers as an accessory if you didn’t order it from the factory. The donut spare is usually an 18” Or 19” diameter tire that is also only about 5” wide.
But do know that the width of the wheel/tire combo also can have an affect on how it fits in the trunk. The wider the width the higher it will sit in the trunk when laid flat. If you have a wheel well for the spare…if you get a 9”/10”/11” wide spare tire…it will usually stick up ABOVE the wheel well and give an uneven trunk floor.
