WoW!! Big difference in drivability after knock sensor replacement!!!

Car no longer pings under load around 3k rpm. CEL gone for a full day now. Feels like car is smoother now that the ECU is freaking out and retarding timing.

If you're throwing the 1226 code, just get it done!

I hate to bring this thread back from the dead but if my car has a build date of 8/95 is that considered late or early build?? Im curious if i could do the "come from beneath" approach.

idk i have a 04/95 and am currently doing the head gasket...i took the intake manifold off this week and it was a bitch but i got it done with no prior mechanical experience and a mediocre set of tools....so just take off the intake mani and you can fix other common problems at the same time

My 95 was a very early build car (8/94). There was no way, I could have done the job from underneath - imo. It is not that hard to do from above, just need patience.

My check engine light came on and it blinked the code 1286 which essentially is telling me to replace my knock sensors. The problem is I drive a 93 318i how different is the procedure for the replacement from what was stated above?

1286 is knock control test pulse. Never got that before.

By the way, you don't need to remove the manifold to do this, and it can be done in less than three hours.

@shaeff very cool thank you I figured with the much smaller 318i engine I might be able to get around it to access the sensors without having to go to all that trouble hopefully it will work out.

Ah crap, I missed that you had a 318i. Reading > Me lately.

Have you looked under the hood of a m/s50 motor? I replaced the knock sensors on my s50 without removing the manifold in just a few hours. Here's my thread:

Not sure how much easier, or more difficult it is to work on the 318, but if the manifold is around the same angle you should be able to reach what you need.

Yep, that's it. I believe RMEuropean refers to it as a Ping Sensor. Do both.
