    Hole In Bell Hosuing

Having my clutch and flywheel replaced. Shop owner tells me I have a hole in the bell section of the Getrag 420 so I asked if he can plug it with something like JB weld or other... any ideas? Not sure if this happened when the throw-out bearing spilled its guts and threw the ball bearings everywhere or it came from without ... I'd tend to think keeping the elements out couldn't be a waste of time...

Dumb question but are you sure it’s not a Getrag 420g from an E39 which has an extra hole for the crank sensor?

I don't think so... I never actually looked carefully when I bought it three years ago but the VIN is a 540 manual and from the description from the shop it sounded like it was an irregular kind of hole .. not a perfectly round port like opening... I'll raise the idea next chat.

there is no fluid in the bell housing, one of these manual gears even has a blind plug, maybe you mean this? http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E3...rbox_mounting/
Automatic transmissions even have a bigger hole in the bell housing, for example on my 4HP24 the #12, Protection grid for additional fan covers it http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E3...ounting_parts/
that is for cooling the trans on some other cars with a fan installed inside the bell housing.
Just leave the hole, does not matter.

I'll be able to check it tomorrow .. only received a call from the shop where its getting the work done. AS long as such an opening to the interior isn'tconsidered a risk for anything getting inside I'll check for the plug if it turns out to be only that manufactured one.
