    alternator question

    I need a new alternator, 2000 M Roadster.

My question is, nearly all the alternators listed online look different than mine. The plastic on the back has a very large round hole for something.

Mine does not have this. Are they interchangeable or do I need to find one that looks exactly the same? The only one I see that looks the same is a very expensive genuine BMW unit.

Where I live there is a shop that rebuilds alternators, starters and electric motors. If you could find a place like this in your area that would be the most economical way to go.

None around here. I just bought a rebuilt one from Rockauto that looks like it will work. Not an exact looking match but closer that the ones with the big round black hole in the back. I'll find out when it gets here.

Alternators on these cars had a plastic cover on the back that would direct cold air to the alternator for cooling. That's the #3 part in this diagram:

There should also be a duct that attaches to that hole. You should be able to remove this plastic cover and place it on the new alternator.

Reverse for me. I do not have the duct but I guess that answers the question. I could take off the duct.
