Just called my local stealer to get the price on a bolt. It's P/N 52-10-8-399-598 (I think) and attaches the rear of the seat frame to the floor. I was floored when the parts guy said it lists for $38 and would take 3-4 weeks to get it from BMW. I can't find the part in the 96 group of RealOEM so it's tenuous on the p/n guess. So, probably better to just match it up at the hardware store.
So, hi ho, hi ho, it's off the hardware store I go.

That part number shows a bolt that attaches the seat back to the bottom https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...06#52108399598
I would assume that it is some kind of shoulder bolt. You sure thats the one you want? As I recall on my car there is a stud at the front of the seat and a bolt at the back to secure the seat to the floor.

For safety items like the seat bolts, please make sure you buy the correct grade of bolt, otherwise, you could risk serious injury.

It's cheaper at dealers that sell parts online. But the wait will be the same. It looks to be a special type bolt

I got two of those from FCP Euro (cheap) and I think you're correct as they were too small diameter. It's cheaper at dealers that sell parts online. But the wait will be the same. It looks to be a special type bolt
You are correct, wrong bolt. The original has no shoulder. Hopefully, I can match it up at the hardware store. But even if the bolt isn't as strong, I can at least get the specs and find it elsewhere. That part number shows a bolt that attaches the seat back to the bottom

You would probably be looking at 52108233497 an M10 bolt by 28.5 long. Unsure of thread fineness.

I think you're correct.
I just matched it up at the hardware store and it's course thread: 10MM-1.50 X 28.5 (I got X 30 as it was the closest match).
My original bolt is not a flange bolt such as that shown for the PN at https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-1...uine-bmw-part/ My bolt is fully threaded and has just a tiny shoulder with a captured washer. I saw some flange bolts at the hardware store, but was a little worried the diameter of the flange wouldn't clear the rails on either side. If that bolt isn't fully threaded in, the seat mechanism jams and it wouldn't go fully back.
The mechanic will chase the threads tomorrow and use one of my bolts (I got black steel and stainless steel) and I'll order the flange bolt for next time the seat's out.

BMW hardware like this tends to be pricey (those are also technically a safety component so probably go through a lot more qualification in the supply chain which adds to the cost). The newer models use a lot of "one time use" bolts and fortunately those tend to be much more affordable...

Not sure I would use stainless steel there. I believe stainless is weaker.
Yes, I think, but we'll see when I get it. Just ordered from Turner Motorsports for exactly half the price (considering shipping) as my local stealer. I think my local stealer is either having a hard time surviving or just greedy since several other online BMW Parts dealers charge much less. Thank god for the internet, it keeps some competition in the market. That plus fast shipping options now (UPS, FedEx, etc.).

McMaster has Class 8.8 bolts in the size you mention for $10 for a pack of 25:
https://www.mcmaster.com/bolts/syste...x-head-screws/
And Class 10.9 in packs of 10 for $7.44 (this would be the lowest class I would go with, and is equivalent to Grade 8):
https://www.mcmaster.com/bolts/syste...x-head-screws/
And Class 12.9 in packs of 10 for $10.67:

They also have them in 28 mm if that's the length you would prefer.

I wish I had seen is earlier. I was in a U-pull yard and would have grabbed a couple of these bolts off a Z3 they have. Usually no charge for small hardware if you have other parts you're buying.
-Donny
Thanks, and you're fortunate to have a pull yard with Z3(s). Here in Des Moines, we do have a pull yard, but I've never seen a Z3 in inventory.

At least hardware hs substututes. No substitute for things like the M differential bushing!
These parts aren't that expensive if you DON'T go to the stealership.
You can get just about everything from aftermarket companies now, and those parts are literally the same parts made in the same factory.
Never buy parts at the stealership, its always been a ripoff.
If you must buy them, get them from an online store that specializes in parts.
White is Right, Steel Grey is OK, but Estoril is the only color that truly matters.
I like Coupes.
