    M60B44 (kinda) Twin Turbo project

Hey Guys, you might know me from my previous project engine build. A M62 block, M60 heads, Jaguar Eaton M112 Supercharger, mated to a Getrag 420G running off of an Arduino all in a Tbucket:

Today I wanted to share the very beginnings of the next project engine:

    Recently picked up non-vanos M62B44:

    Also picked up an M60B40:

A pair of Garrett turbos from an AMG 5.5L:

I plan to adapt the flanges of the AMG manifolds in a similar way that I modified the coyote 5.0L long tube headers on the the current M60B44:

For the engine itself, I plan to maintain both the M62B44 block and it's heads. Go through the M62 heads, surface, valve job, replace the hydraulic lifters with VAG solid mechanical lifters, set the valve clearances using the M60B40 cams. Then assemble with the M60 timing chains, idler gear and new guides.

I haven't decided if I want to set up the heads using one M62 cam and one M60 cam for a 249/246 duration with 9.7mm/8.95mm lift. Or run just the M60 cams for a 249/241 9.7mm/9.35mm. If it would be more advantages to lose .4mm of valve lift for 5 more degrees of duration or not, or is the trade off negligible.

Using the M60 OBD1 front crank trigger timing cover & damper it will have a nice 60-2 crank trigger and a single cam trigger pulse from the M60 cam gear to utilize a simple standalone EFI controller that will run the V8 in sequential channel speed density.

I'm afraid this thread will be a slow burn as I've got a lot on my plate right now with the other Supercharged M60B44. But I'll be back to update as progress is made. Cheers -Mykk

Love the build. I did a similar build with a M60b30. Long story, but I used E36 pistons to get 8.5:1 compression, and I installed solid valves to get higher top rpm. I used turbo manifolds off a 550 as they have the same centers, and used adapters to line up the bolts. The turbos are dual T04's good for 600 HP+, but probably won't go that high. I ran it on a test stand with a Haltech Elite ECU, and it is now in a Boxster in my garage. I found an inexpensive adapter kit to mate to a Porsche/Audi/VW 5-speed transmission. Yes it is a bit weak, but I can source them all day at $20 each. I am working on the body of the car right now, and hope to get it running this spring. The M60 is a great engine, and I am confident it will hold together.

    02 E53 X5 4.6 swap
Sorry to contribute to a diagonal thread drift, but you guys are my M62 hero’s.

I just finished (my first) swap of a new M62TUB46 into my 2002 E53 X5 4.4i. It’s a 4.6i now I figure and my wife may take her car back because after a week or so on the road it looks to be a fun monster. It was hers when new, then my kids flogged it as new drivers and when they came home from school, and then it became my pandemic project. I’m doing and overland style build with it as money and time allow. That swap extracted a few pounds of flesh out of me, but it’s on the road and running strong. I’m still breaking the motor in, but I did open it up a bit more on the on-ramp today and man that 4.6 pulls like a freight train and sounds great. Still more to do, including some long needed interior restoration, but I’ve got a fun daily driver back and a car that will take me on long trips with my pups to bird hunt. One gas station at a time though as I can already tell the 4.6 is a serious gas guzzler.

At any rate, I’ve never rebuilt a motor and now I’ve got a 4.4 M62 newly liberated from my X5 on a stand. It’s a grease and oil soaked lump right now, but I’ve got it in my mind to go the M62B44 route, assuming the block is in good shape. A bullet proof double row chain with a roller instead of plastic guides and after market cams available for M60 heads sounds like the usual place to start this build. An E36 sedan or a gen 1 Camaro build seem like a fun place for it to end up.

Can I get your opinions on the max streetable power I can get out of an M62B44 motor? It sounds like 400 hp normally aspirated is not doable, but can I get north of 350, and what should I be thinking about, reading, researching etc. to generate max power out of the M6x motor? I’d like to stay with a normally aspirated build ideally.

Related, I have heard that the m6x family runs out of poop at around 5500 rpm. What you guys have found and if so, what can be done to keep producing power above 5500ish?

Thanks in advance for any advice and guidance you guys may have.
