Drop the subframe
Use a die grinder and cut off tool to dismantle the headers piece by piece
I've read in many places that you have to remove a specific motor mount and jack up the engine to get at the manifold bolts for the sake of removal, corroborated by my naïve attempts at getting a ratchet in there. (the next time someone says "drop the subframe" I'm taking a die grinder to the old manifold and removing it piece by piece) Does anyone have a DIY on this or anything directly related to it? I can't seem to find anything useful. Would be greatly appreciated as I'm typing this from under my car...
Tread lightly; you do NOT want to snap a manifold bolt without a welder handy. What is your goal for removing those after you've hacked your exhaust completely apart? What's the issue with dropping the subframe? It's only a 2 hour job.
Why do you need to remove the exhaust manifolds?
