Half shaft in and out play at outer CV joint!

I have one of my halfshafts out of my car and when I grab the shaft I can push it in and out of the outer CV joint. Should it have any play while it is out of the car?

i think they do because the rollers sit in little cups so there is a little play in them

There needs to be a little play so that the joint can move and flex freely. If the boot is ripped or you see grease leaking out, I'd rebuild them or buy already rebuilt ones to be safe.

Ok thanks for the information. I am getting almost an inch of play though, I thought maybe that is to much!

that seems like a lot. i am not sure how much there should be though. one of the other guys should have an answer

that seems like too much. there is some play though.
