Programming for changing the power steering rack?

I start listening a noise from power steering rack identical to clicking and a bit loose when car is looking straight, like this sound:

Bmw dealer told me approx. $3200 to replace the entire power steering rack. $1700 labor (apprx from a phone call).
Bmw also mentioned that they need to program the car for the new power steering rack? Is it true? It does not make any sense. I was about to order the part and replace it myself but then the programming got me.
    Any experience?
    Thanks

Depends, if you vehicle has electronic steering then yes it must be programmed.

If you vehicle has hydraulic steering, which it may if your vehicle is a 535xi has per your "my Cars" info, then no it does not need programming.

    Mark.
