In the past month I have acquired a 2002 BMW 330Ci convertible with no engine, transmission, or drivetrain. I have been looking for engines I have had no luck finding a M54b30 like what came in the car and I did find a good deal on a 7mgte from the Mk3 supra and was wondering if anyone has ever heard of this swap or know how difficult it would be im pretty sure it would be just as hard as a 2JZ and I know I would have to do custom wiring and have to change parts of the drivetrain which I need already. Would it be worth it to have a "rare" build and put the 7m inside of my e46?
My biggest concern would be with emissions, if you have emissions inspection where you are. Many areas swapping in an older engine is a no-go for emissions reasons.
Check out www.car-part.com for a used m54b30. It's an online database of junkyards. Enter year, make, model, and part, then your zipcode, and you can sort the results by distance from you, or by price.

Take a trip down to southeast Florida. The U-pull yards are full of E46/M54 cars, often 8+ to choose from. The stock engine/transmission would be by far the easiest route for your project. The only caution is that many of the cars are in the junkyards due to overheating issues from lack of maintenance.
I also know of someone in Miramar/Pembroke Pines (Ft Lauderdale) that specializes only in E46 cars, parting out totaled vehicles that often are running and driving.
