INPA won’t communicate with engine modules

    Hi everyone

I would like to check errors in the eml/dme modules of my 90 850i.
I bought an ADS interface, connected to my computer through a serial link.
With INPA, I can read many modules I don't need to access like EDC, IHKA. My issue is that I can't access the DME1, 2, or the EML.

Did you experience a similar issue and is there à way to fix?

Many thanks for your comments and tips.

    Hi everyone,

    No progress on my side.
Is there someone here who have an earlier 850i with INPA working, and would send me the configuration files? I'm wondering if it could be caused by non compatible files with earlier cars...

    Any advice is wellcome!

I have the same problem but with my EML in my 93 M70 car. I can talk to the DMEs fine using INPA and DIS but neither can talk to the EML. Guessing whatever you have wrong I also have wrong but there's no telling (yet).

    Thanks for your feedback.
I may start with the DME as there is no proof INPA will work with the EML.

dragon850 here on the forum sold me my entire diag setup as he has for many members and assured me it worked on his 93 M70 car before he sent it my way and I have no reason to doubt him as he has been instrumental in helping me get my car to where it is (it was basically a litany of common E31 issues at first). For this reason I have to figure it is something specific about my car (and probably yours is my guess) that makes certain modules difficult to read.

If you go into details of what's wrong with your car we might be able to help you figure out what the issues are without the diagnostics.

You're right, I have to share details of what is wrong.

Let's say it is very simple: I always go to the same message "data connexion to control unit disturbed" and nothing more.
If I restart INPA, I can go back to all other modules again.
The point is: It is working with other modules, so I believe that my hardware setup is OK, and INPA is properly configured, but if you think a may missed something, let me know...

Replace the data files in INPA with DME17L.IPO and DME17R.IPO. Can be downloaded as zip-file "m70_non_ews_e31klubpl.rar". Search for the post by member OGOREK in 2012. I had the same problem but it works for me now. You can actually monitor both banks at the same time using DMEBOTH.IPO, but I couldn't get that to work.

    Hi Ben
Check this link you can download the script for your DME BUT EML can't be read. Like Albert said DMEBOTH.IPO not work. Just a reminder sometime is best for Inpa turn off your virus monitoring before diagnostic.

    Thanks for your tips.
I'm using the non ews IPO files. To be sure, I tried both version (with and without ews), and none let INPA communicate with the DME's.
I also understand that no one can communicate with the EML on earlier models like mine (12/90).
I am still at the same point: INPA can communicate with many modules (IHKA, EKM, EDC,...) but not the DME, even using the modified no ews IPO files.
I'm using à 32bits win7, and the interface on the picture, and I'm using the real serial COM port on my computer.
Do you think it is possible that there is something wrong with my computer as it is communicating with other modules...
Thanks for your help and comments

In Windows, try to set the latency timer in advanced COM port settings from 16 to 1 msec. Read about this but have not tried it myself.

This might be a part of my issue. In win7, I didn't find where to change latency. I can change only the buffer size

Nah, the latency timer only goes for USB 'serial' ports.

RS232 ports only have settings which you show in you pic (T/R buffer).

    Hi everyone

After trying several combinations with INPA, I gave up, and tried the stomp test.

As I am in Europe, I had fisrt to fit à bulb in the Check Engine Light. The lights is working great: it comes when the ignition is ON, and go OFF when the engine is started.
I try many times th stomp test ( ignition ON , wail EML light to go out, then pushed the gaz pedal 5 times) and I do not get any flash with the CEL...
I doubt that the stomp test is working with the EU spec.
Am I missing anything with that stomp test ?

No stomp test in the UK, so I guess France may well be the same. In the UK the EML bulb is not fitted either, so I guess we are much the same with no stomp codes...

    Thank you Timm.
So I have no other choice: I have to be able to get INPA working with my DMEs.

Update with the INPA connection :
    I have still no connection...
I have found this Website where the guy explain the communication protocol:
    http://km5tz.com/BMW%20850iP11.htm
So I have plugged an analyser and found that the communication is starting but nothing more:
    I have this:
    Inpa: wake up
    850i: 55 00 81 (I’m awake message)
    inpa: 7E (ok, continue)
And then nothing from the DME... looks like this version of DME is not able to communicate with inpa.

I will continue to investigate but I'm not sure to get it running...

The cable you are using doesn't work.
I was never able to get my systems to work with that cable, threw it in the garbage.
    tiny ads interface works great.

Yup. I've never been able to use one of those boxes successfully, especially on early cars.

I checked the engine harness continuité and it is OK. I gave up for tokay, but still thinking about it: I didn't look at the 15pin to 20pin adapter. It may be also the bad guy. I am try to found how it should be connected from 15 to 20 and will check that...

    Hi everyone
I m still stuck with the communication with the engine modules. I would get the tiny ADS interface, but it seem's that it is not available anywhere. Any idea where to get one?
