So my headlights, brake lights and turn signal has not been working for awhile. So I've been doing some diagnosing and found one of my 40 fuse in glovebox blown so I replaced it. As soon as I put the new one in smoke started coming from underneath driver footwell area and once again the fuse blow. Long story short the lighting module was fried. So my question is can I just install a used one or do I need to get it program?
Also water has been getting on the rear and driver floor boards.
If it comes from identical car spec / lights , part number module then prob work straight away , but if not then coding will be needed for sure.
Get those ecu’s tucked up in the side pockets in the rear , much safer and drier .

I havde a bad LCM in my '08 wagon.
From my research, the LCM is one of the modules that is encoded for the car's mileage, and that replacing the module will trigger a mileage tamper warning (or possibly change the mileage appearing on the dash?) if the mileage in the donor car is much different (outside of a small parameter of difference allowed?). Hard to find exact details, but it seems like getting the current module rebuilt or replacing with a new unit (and programming) at the dealership are the best options. Hoping I'm wrong, but this is what my research has suggested, and I'll be taking my E61 to BMW of North Haven for that in a couple weeks.

I certainly hope you're right!
I've only been able to find E39-specific info, but I can't imaging BMW went backward regarding odometer safety. Here's a link to a thread I found in the E39 section: https://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/s...luster-mileage
It looks like, at least for the E39, that the mileage in the LCM will be overwritten if the cluster mileage is higher, but not if the cluster mileage is lower. Not sure if this applies to the later BMWs.
That said, I'm hoping the E39 doesn't apply to the E60--getting a used unit would be much more cost-effective. Would love more info!

I had the exact same issue. My car still smells like burnt electronics. Had to change the individual headlight modules on the bottom of the lights. One had water intrusion. I used a healthy dose of dielectric grease to keep water out.
The programming is sraight forward. You just need the VIN programmed in. There's tutorials all over youtube.
