I'm installing a used but refreshed m54. I'd like to know if I can do an oil fill, squirt some oil in the cylinders, button it up and see if I get ignition BEFORE I install the cooling system, exhaust, and the rest of the front of the car.
It would be nice to know it will probably run before I put all the other stuff together.

Sure you can, as long as you expect it to be very loud. Also, don't run it more than a minute since you don't have the cooling system connected.
