e46 m3 smg to manual DME coding part numbers

Ive done e46 auto to manual with no problems. My process for for that is to connect the e46 of similar year that is manual already to ista/p and read out the program number it will update to. Then flash that to the automatic cars DME. I have no idea how to figure out what DME program number to use other than that way. Real OEM lists programmed part numbers for it, but none of those numbers are in the MSS54 list i have which is the latest available..
I scanned a 10/2002 which on real oem is last production (only production) break and it lists a part number of 7 842 345. When i connect it to latest ista/p, it wants to program it to 7 842 973.
here's the rub, when i use winfp, choose that part number, enter the vin, when i choose program, it gives a fault message (which i didnt screenshot) but it said hardware error something, .. more or less incompatible.

How do you figure out what MSS54 ecu file to choose for manual when doing a SMG to manual swap? Im certainly not going to wing it..

I've already done the coding of the VO...car starts and runs, but the abs light is on and says coding is faulty (or similar in german). DME has a fault for smg-can time out, which normally gets cleared when you do an adaptation reset after programming of the DME, but I cant program that part number to it.

    help/advice/link?

    thanks

7842973 is correct for MSS54 (non HP) and manual transmission for a USA M3. That's what ZB I use for this conversion.

Can you see what that error says and what hardware numbers it claims are wrong?

thanks for the reply. went over and attempted to program the car to get the error. attached.

it says hardware number not matching. Not sure how to check for manual program# based on hardware number..

have no idea what mss54 hp is, but this car might . according to https://www.renovelo.com/bytetuner-v...compatibility/
    zb# hw # sw#

    ZB# Hardware# Software#

I have 7842979 in the ZB# which says manual and matches the Hardware#..... gonna do a quick search and see what the the difference between the 2 is.
    Thanks

I would physically check on the dme cover if it says mss54 or mss54hp (an update of the dme, installed after 2003.5).

Also if someone fitted an MSS54HP, you have to check if they did it by syncing ews, or simply disabling it. If you would flash an ews deleted dme, then the car won't start, until that's fixed again.

Much appreciate the help and advice.
    It is a 4/04 production.

I'll confirm EWS is operational via ista/d before removing the ecu as owner might not know, if ok i'll remove the cover and check the DME label to confirm. Dont want to turn a driving car into a non driving car

    Thanks again,
    Clint

Side note, how would you test/check if EWS was disabled

There is no good/easy way to see if EWS is disabled without reading the data inside.
If the DME is original to the car with the VIN sticker on it, then you'll definitely be fine.

Wait, so your car is a 2004? Then I don't think anyone fitted the updated DME, your car came with it.
I think I was thrown off by seeing MSS54.

If that's the case, I use 7843301 for manual transmission MSS54HP.

Worst case scenario, I see you're in Houston, we can solve it somehow.

    LS e39, LT e53,
alrighty.... programmed it to 7843301 successfully. re-coded cluster, lamp module and dsc. Cleared DME adaptations the smg-can timeout fault still there. In case INPA was not clearing, connected to ista/d and did it there too, no difference, fault returned. (all connectors are unplugged from SMG unit).
    thanks

I apologize, I copied and pasted the wrong one

Flash 7842977, this one is manual. I checked the data byte manually just now.

I forgot to update, but I flashed the DME successfully with the number above 7842997 and programmed fine, however cruise control does not work. Is this something that is normal to be lost when doing this conversion?

I remember doing 2 regular automatic e46 to manual, I got it to work, but never wrote down notes, it was more like trying random things and it happened to work.

    Clutch switch is wired in.

    thanks,

edit, Going to double check the signal wire going to DME from clutch switch....

update: installer did not wire clutch to DME
