Thanks for the insight - I wasn't very familiar with the tech aspect of dual mass, or e39's for that matter. I was just curious if that was something that people did and after I took mine off and saw how heavy and hammered it was.
I'll have to check out Hubbard's, I'm now unsure if I'll take off the heads because the VANOS is a bit daunting. But if I re-use that flywheel I'll check them out. As far as the oil pan goes, I might have to bite the bullet and get an M62 one. Going to do a bit more research to see compatibility or issues (i'm sure there aren't really any) and I'll see if I can just source an S62 pan first. I also might reach out for some help, I am somewhat familiar with BMW's but I've never gone this deep into one. Just a pain I can only work on the thing after work.
Been a long while so I figured i'd do an update now, also might've done an ACL so kinda halted some progress.
My S62 is basically finished! We did rod bearings, both oil pans, o-rings, gaskets, thermostat housing, valve covers, and just pretty much anything that is a maintenance wear item - we did it. I picked up a set of E39 M5 wheels (Style 65's). Freshly powder coated and they look fantastic. I ripped out all of the interior on my donor car and have it all ready to go into the touring. Running into the problem of space of course, need to find a home for the car we keep in the garage before I can rip apart my touring. The biggest hurdles I have now are probably the wiring, disassembly and reassembly, and time. Of course now that I am doing an update i'm blanking on so much of the work that we did and some other issues that came up while it was going on.
Most notably being doing rod bearings, my torque wrench zero'd out on the last f-ing bolt. Since we ran OEM and they're stretch to yield we decided since the oil pan was off we would just get new bearings and bolts to be safe. With the engine being out of the car it really isn't that difficult to do the work since you can just walk around it and not have to fight anything.
When I bought those style 65's, I got them down in LA and on my way back I picked up a 1976 BMW 2002. Got it for a good deal, and I wanted to manual swap it since it would've been super simple, but after I bought it I figured probably a good idea to just flip it and not have two cars with parts all over the place. With some of the profits from that it basically paid for my trip down and the set of wheels. Slowly but surely being consumed by all things BMW!
If y'all have any questions, feel free to ask. I know I blanked on so much of what I did, lol.
