Slapping/knocking in engine on cold start

So, I own a ‘94 3.0L 5-speed Euro spec car that came from Japan. It has 130K km or 81K miles.

On a very cold start, like 8+ hours, I get a fairly noticeable knock, that turns into a deeper banging, if revved up. If I let it idle for around 2 minutes, it’s very slightly rough, until I get a distinct change, and the issue disappears completely.

i put a new timing chain tensioner in, thinking it was bleeding down, but the issue has not changed.

Could something in the VANOS be moving around, until it gets enough oil flow? It’s got a good oil in it, and less than 3K miles on the oil.

As always, hook it up to BMW diagnostics software and read out all error memories. This might give you a good indication.

Thanks for the input. I don’t have a good example of it up and running. I’ll get that going, eventually. I asked here, to see if anyone with a similar car had a similar problem. I’ll figure it out.
